Mould making with vinamold reusable moulding rubber

25/10/2015

Made a happy discovery when researching ways to make moulds for casting plaster.  As part of my Masters I will be experimenting with new supports for my photography.

The beauty of the vinamold is that if heated correctly it can be reheated up to 35 times to make new moulds.  It was easy to prepare, but be warned if you wish to use yourself. When in it's molten state it is hotter than boiling water.  Do not be tempted as I was to push a little that had escaped up the spoon back into the pan.............bloomimg sore does not come even close.

23rd October 2015

24/10/2015

Today saw the second of 12 seminars for this academic year.  I cannot believe how much I have gained in just a few weeks of study.  It has been difficult for me, and for those that know me well will understand when I say how hard it is keeping my gob shut, being made to listen to others without interrupting.  Truly I am trying my hardest!

I have been challenged, directed and inspired by both my tutor and peers.

Was an added bonus to meet up with my group tutor today, David Blyth, as I wasn't expecting to meet with him till next week.  For sure he is going to keep me on my toes.

I was then accosted by two ex students and taken to their studio spaces, so good to see Jasmin and Ameena again.  I will bring cake next time I visit.

It was such a mental happy day.  Didn't get my lunch till 4.30pm.  And again, for those that know me well that is an extraordinary feat too for I am always feeding my face!

Visit to Coastal Battery at Hoxa Head, Orkney

17/10/2015

Documentation of visit to Coastal Battery at Hoxa Head in Orkney on Tuesday 13th October.  Lots of photographs taken with my digital SLR camera.  These will be edited in Photoshop then printed onto laser transparencies so I can take them into the darkroom and make cyanotypes.

Newest addition to the collection..........

Was very excited to find a Polaroid Camera in a second hand shop when I visited Orkney this week.  Bargain at £2.00.  Have already ordered film from https://www.the-impossible-project.com/.   Now to look into how to make Polaroid Image Transfers!

Student Learning Contract and Project Proposal Project title: ‘Wonder is the beginning of wisdom’ - Socrates

16/10/2015

My proposed project is not motivated by politics or a moral agenda. However it is very important to me not to create a body of work that is vacuous and vapid. My initial proposal at interview had been to create a body of work that was inspired by the coastline. This is still my intention as the coastline is where I live, explore, breath and play. But the message that I wish to convey could be applied to any chosen environment.
‘Wonder is the beginning of wisdom’ – Socrates. When we are children we readily wonder at our world, the skies and worlds beyond. Children are not embarrassed to explore or question. They are excited to learn and experience. They see the beauty in both the minute and the immense. I am thankful that I have not lost my sense of wonder. Not only does the view from a hill that I have summated inspire me but I am equally passionate about a rusty nail that I have discovered in the road on my way to work.
Already for this project over the summer I have been collecting found objects that I wish to use/inspire mixed media works. From pieces of copper wire turned verdigris to sea worn pieces of wood that I wish to steal their delicious nature forged surfaces by taking plaster cast moulds so I can use them as supports for my cyanotypes.
The media I wish to employ in the production of this project are:
1. Photography – Digital (SLR/camera phone) Analogue (pinhole/glass plate?) Alternative processes (cyanotype/gum bichromate/silver gelatine)
2. Mixed media compositions
My intention is to produce a body of work that entices the viewer re-consider what their definition of beauty is and what is interesting enough to be viewed for longer than a glance and wondered upon.
